What flavoured Jim Beam actually is

Every bottle in this range starts as the same Kentucky straight bourbon that goes into White Label. Flavour and a small amount of sweetening are added afterwards, and the result is bottled at 32.5% ABV rather than 37%. Legally most of these are liqueurs rather than straight whiskey, which is why the labels are worded the way they are.

The lower strength is not a shortcut, it is the format. At 32.5% these are built to be poured long over ice with a mixer, and they hold their flavour in a tall glass in a way that a heavily diluted straight bourbon does not. Neat and at room temperature most of them are too sweet to enjoy for more than a glass.

They are also the entry point. A very large share of people who now drink Jim Beam Black neat started on Honey or Apple with lemonade, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Which flavours you can actually buy in Australia

Three of these are on the Australian shelf: Honey, Apple and Red Stag Black Cherry. They are distributed locally, priced accordingly, and easy to find.

The other four are not. Peach, Vanilla, Orange and Pineapple are American releases that Beam Suntory does not bring into Australia. We import them, which is why they cost more than the local bottles and why the sizes are 750mL rather than 700mL. If you have been searching for Jim Beam Peach in Australia and finding nothing, that is the reason.

Prices across the range run from $50.95 for Honey 700mL to $109.99 for Orange. The gap is import cost and scarcity, not quality.

How to pour them

Long, cold, and with more ice than you think. Honey and Apple take lemonade. Red Stag takes cola or dry ginger. Peach and Pineapple take soda water and a wedge of lime, which stops them turning into cordial. Vanilla is the one that works with cola properly, and Orange is best with soda and a lot of orange peel.

Two rules that apply to all of them. First, chill the bottle. At room temperature the sweetness sits on top and the bourbon underneath disappears. Second, do not stint on the mixer. A 30mL pour in 150mL of mixer is right; a 60mL pour is a syrup.

For anything you intend to drink neat, buy from the straight range instead. Devil's Cut and Jim Beam Rye are the two least sweet bottles on the site.

Ordering and delivery

Everything on this page is in stock in Sydney and dispatched Australia-wide the same business day on orders placed before 3pm AEST. Standard freight is $10.00 and runs about three business days to the capitals; express is $35.00 and free once your order passes $300, which two of the imported bottles will clear.

Bottles ship wrapped and braced, with nothing on the carton identifying the contents. An adult 18 or over has to sign for the delivery.

Bank transfer, PayID and cryptocurrency are all accepted, and crypto orders take 15% off the total.
