Jim Beam Rye 700ml – Pre-Prohibition Style at 40% and $60.75
The nose leads with rye spice over a rich, oaky smokiness. The palate is spicy and sweet at once, with caramelised brown notes behind the pepper, and the finish fades smooth rather than sharp. Black pepper is the marker. If you taste a bourbon and think it needs more bite, this is the bottle with it.
The label says Kentucky straight rye whiskey, and straight is doing real work there. It means at least two years in new charred oak with nothing added, no colouring and no sweetening. Whatever spice you get came out of the grain and the barrel.
Jim Beam Rye or the Bourbon – Where the Spice Comes From
Most people who buy this expect a spicier White Label. That is not what arrives. The grain recipe leads with rye instead of corn, so the sweetness that makes White Label so easy with cola is largely gone, replaced by pepper and a drier, shorter finish.
Hence the one firm opinion here: do not put Jim Beam Rye in cola. The sugar smothers the pepper you paid the extra $15.85 for. This bottle earns its price neat, over one large cube, or stirred into a cocktail. At the same $60.75, Devil's Cut is also 40% and pulls the opposite way, heavier and oakier where the rye is drier and hotter. The choice is flavour, not money.
Jim Beam Rye in a Manhattan – The Reason This Bottle Sits on Our Shelf
A Manhattan made with bourbon is a decent drink. A Manhattan made with rye is the drink. Sweet vermouth already brings sugar and dried fruit, so a corn-sweet bourbon doubles up and the glass goes flabby. Rye pepper cuts through and the cocktail holds its shape.
Our house pour is 60ml Jim Beam Rye to 30ml sweet vermouth, two dashes of bitters, stirred over ice about thirty seconds and strained. One bottle gives roughly eleven Manhattans, or $5.52 of whiskey per drink. The same logic applies to an Old Fashioned: anywhere the recipe wants the whiskey to push back, this is the bottle.
Jim Beam Rye Price and Value – What $60.75 Buys Per Standard Drink
Do the arithmetic instead of trusting a shelf tag. At 700ml and 40%, standard drinks are 0.7 x 40 x 0.789, which is 22.1 for the bottle. A 30ml nip is 0.95, close enough to one that counting is easy. Per 100mL you pay $8.68 against $6.41 for White Label, and per standard drink $2.75.
That is $8.24 under the $68.99 we most often see it listed at elsewhere. The Australian alcohol guidelines set out the low risk figures if you want to check what you are pouring. A gift box is $35.00 extra.

Common questions
Ours is $60.75 for the 700ml bottle, down from $69.99, against the $68.99 we most often see elsewhere. That is $8.24 saved on a single bottle. Per 100mL it works out at $8.68 and per standard drink at $2.75. No membership card is needed to get that price.
The grain recipe. Rye leads with rye instead of corn, so the corn sweetness that defines the bourbon drops away and dry pepper spice takes its place. Both are 700ml Kentucky straight whiskeys, but Rye is 40% against 37% for White Label, and drier with it.
It is the better choice over the bourbon. Sweet vermouth already brings sugar to the glass, so a corn-sweet bourbon makes the drink heavy, while rye pepper cuts through and keeps it sharp. We pour 60ml rye to 30ml sweet vermouth with two dashes of bitters, stirred rather than shaken.
40% alcohol by volume, which is 80 proof on the American scale. That puts it above White Label at 37% and level with Jim Beam Black Extra Aged and Devil's Cut, both also 40%. A 30ml nip of any of the three is 0.95 of an Australian standard drink.
Not in our catalogue. Rye is a 700ml line here and that is the only size we can supply. The 1 litre and 1.125L bottles are White Label and Black only, listed on the 1 litre range page. If a larger rye format reaches Australia we will list it.
